By the 1930s the Royal Marines wore a badge unlike any other in the British service: a globe encircled by laurel. The story goes back to 1827, when King George IV, casting about for a single battle honour to represent a corps that had fought in so many actions its colours could not hold them all, gave the Marines the globe itself — they had served, in effect, everywhere. The laurel commemorated their assault on Belle Île in 1761. To it were joined the fouled anchor of the Admiralty and the motto Per Mare, Per Terram — "By Sea, By Land." This full-dress figure of 1935 carries that whole history on his helmet plate.

W. Britain stands the Marine in home-service full dress: the dark blue tunic with its facings, blue trousers, a white Wolseley-pattern helmet bearing the Globe and Laurel, a white belt, and a bayoneted rifle at the shoulder. It is a ceremonial uniform, the Corps on parade rather than in action. He completes the Royal Marines cluster alongside the Napoleonic-era Royal Marine Officer and Royal Marine Sergeant who carried the same traditions a century earlier, with the Royal Marine Bugler to sound the calls on parade.

W. Britain model 13011. 1/30 scale (approximately 60mm), solid metal hand-painted in a matte finish. Single foot figure on a sculpted groundwork base. Supplied in a window box.
