In combat a GI lived out of cans and boxes — the C-ration's monotonous stew and hash, the compact waxed-cardboard K-ration with its biscuits and tinned meat, eaten cold in a foxhole. A hot meal cooked in a field kitchen and carried forward in insulated containers was something else entirely: not just calories but a lift to the spirit, proof that someone in the rear still cared. In the frozen chaos of the Bulge, where roads were cut and units scattered, a pot of hot stew was a small victory in itself.
