Confederate Artillery Crewman with Sponge and Rammer
Confederate Artillery Crewman with Sponge and Rammer
This is toy soldier - Confederate Artillery Crewman with Sponge and Rammer
This toy soldier, model number 31420, is a highly detailed representation of a Confederate artillery crewman during the Civil War. The majority of artillery used during this time period were muzzle loading weapons, meaning that the powder charge and projectile had to be loaded from the front. To maximize their efficiency, gun crews used a numbering system where each man had a specific task. The number 1 position was stationed at the right front of the muzzle and their main piece of equipment was the Sponge and Rammer.
The Sponge and Rammer is a long wooden shaft with a sponge made of carpet at one end and a turned wooden rammer at the other. The sponge was used to douse any sparks or burning debris between rounds, while the rammer was used to firmly seat the charge and projectile at the breech. This figure is 1/30 scale and has a matte finish, making it a highly realistic addition to any collection. It comes in a single figure box, making it easy to display or store.
