The Model 1857 12-pounder Napoleon was the dominant light field gun of the Civil War on both sides. Designed in France in 1853 under Emperor Louis-Napoleon (the gun took his name), it combined the roles of gun and howitzer in a single bronze barrel: solid shot on flat trajectory like a cannon, shell and spherical case at high angle like a howitzer, double canister at point-blank range like a shotgun. Every battery commander wanted Napoleons. The Confederates were chronically short of bronze — most "Confederate Napoleons" were captured Federal pieces, supplemented by Tredegar's Richmond foundry working at capacity.
The six-figure set captures a Confederate battery in action: officer leaning over the trail to sight the piece, No.1 with rammer stepping back from the muzzle, No.2 carrying ammunition forward, a third crewman in shirtsleeves working the breech, and two more figures ready at the ammunition chest. Mixed dress throughout — gray shell jackets, white work shirt, red kepi piping marking the artillery branch, brown butternut trousers. Tradition of London paints in gloss enamel for the classic toy soldier finish. Pair the battery with General Lee in overall command, or face it off against Union Artillery with a 12 Pounder Gun for a counter-battery duel.
