The soldier is carrying the Model 1841 'Mississippi' Rifle, which gained its nickname during the Mexican War when Jefferson Davis was appointed Colonel of the Mississippi Rifles. This rifle, with its brass hardware, is considered one of the most handsome weapons of its time and is synonymous with the American Civil War.
The rifle was originally produced in .54 caliber, but many were converted to .58 caliber before the war to accept standard ammunition used by the federal government. Known for its accuracy, the Mississippi Rifle was highly desirable and used in both armies, primarily in flank companies within infantry regiments.
