Confederate enlisted infantry often carried personal revolvers. The Federal army issued pistols only to officers and cavalrymen; the regulation was the same in the Confederate service. But the Confederate army did not enforce the regulation tightly, and many infantrymen brought personal revolvers from home — Colt Navys, Colt Armys, Remingtons, or Southern-made copies — and wore them on the belt in addition to the regulation rifle musket. The pistol was useless past twenty yards and added two and a half pounds to a soldier's load, but it provided one more shot for the close-range combat the Confederate infantry seemed to be in more often than the Federal army wanted. The holstered pistol visible on this figure is the personal weapon his regulation did not require.
This W. Britain figure depicts a Confederate infantryman in the standing-fire stance — body angled, rifle musket leveled at the shoulder, weight back on his right foot. He wears a mixed kit typical of mid-to-late war Confederate service: tan/butternut sack jacket, brown civilian vest underneath, light gray trousers, broad-brimmed slouch hat. The personal revolver in its holster on his belt is the noticeable detail — added to his regulation rifle and cartridge box at his own initiative. The bedroll crosses his chest. Pair this figure with Confederate Infantry Reaching for Cartridge for the loading-and-firing sequence; with Confederate Infantry Kneeling Preparing to Fire as the kneeling rank companion; or with Confederate Corporal Urging Men Forward as the NCO directing the line.
