Little Round Top was saved by Brigadier General Gouverneur K. Warren — the Army of the Potomac's chief engineer, sent up the hill on the morning of July 2, 1863, to assess Union dispositions. The hill was empty. Geary's division had been ordered to Culp's Hill earlier that morning; Daniel Sickles's III Corps, instead of replacing them, had moved forward to the Emmitsburg Road without orders. Warren took one look at Hood's Confederate division forming up in the valley below and immediately sent for Colonel Strong Vincent's brigade of the V Corps. Vincent put the 16th Michigan, 44th NY, 83rd PA, and 20th Maine into line minutes ahead of the Confederate attack. Little Round Top held.
