The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia Battle Flag was square, not rectangular. The version of the Confederate flag that most modern Americans recognize — long, rectangular, red field with the blue saltire — was actually based on the Confederate Navy Jack, not the ANV Battle Flag itself. The flag the ANV infantry actually carried was forty-eight inches square. The thirteen stars on the saltire represented eleven seceded states plus Kentucky and Missouri, which the Confederacy claimed as members although neither state had officially seceded. The infantry flag was issued in 48-inch square; the artillery's was 36 inches square; the cavalry's was 30 inches square. The rectangular version came later and never replaced the square in field use.
