A French infantry regiment carried two kinds of colour, and the one that best identified it was not the white one. Most regiments of the line carried a colonel's colour that was white with a white cross. The regiment's real badge was its drapeaux d'ordonnance: coloured flags, usually built on the old pattern of a white cross on a coloured field. The colonel chose the design, and it could change when he did, so a regiment's colours were almost a family coat of arms. Every French flag carried a white cravat tied below the finial, the sign of French nationality, a practice that became general after the Battle of Fleurus in 1691.
This is a battalion's command group. One officer carries the colour, white and red on a gilded pike, and a second advances with his sword drawn. The drummer wears a blue coat laced in white and red and plays a blue drum with red hoops. Two sergeants carry halberds, one pointing out the line and the other raising his fist, and two men stand with their muskets. Apart from the drummer, all wear the grey-white coats of the French line, with blue cuffs, buff belts, white gaiters and black tricornes edged in white. Put this group at the centre of French Infantry, with French Artillery Gun (Seven Years War) in support. Hang Don Troiani's Bearn Regiment print behind them.
