George S. Patton was America's most aggressive field commander, and the Battle of the Bulge was his finest hour. When the Germans tore open the American line in the Ardennes on December 16, 1944, and surrounded the 101st Airborne at Bastogne, it was Patton who answered. At a tense conference in Verdun on the 19th he stunned Eisenhower and the assembled generals by promising to attack the German flank with three divisions in barely two days — a wheel of his entire Third Army ninety degrees to the north, across frozen roads most thought impossible. He launched it on the morning of December 22, and by the 26th his tanks had broken through to the defenders of Bastogne.
K&C's set gives Patton in his trademark tanker's jacket and helmet, returning a soldier's salute with the ivory-gripped pistol at his hip — and at his feet, alert, his English bull terrier Willie. Bought for the general in England in March 1944, and previously the pet of an RAF pilot under the name Punch, Willie went everywhere with him. Pose Patton with his own Command Set, then set him against the two ends of the Bastogne story his Third Army drove to resolve — the encircled 101st Airborne of Welcome to Bastogne and the German Volksgrenadier whose division had them surrounded. He is the command anchor of any Bulge diorama.
