By the first week of March 1836 the Alamo was nearly finished without a fight. The garrison was cut off, low on everything, and no relief was coming; a few more days of siege would very likely have forced a surrender. Some of Santa Anna's officers urged him to wait. He refused. He wanted the fort taken by storm — a swift, terrible example that would break the nerve of the whole Texian rebellion — and he ordered the assault for the pre-dawn hours of 6 March. It worked, and it cost him: the storming of a ruined mission held by fewer than 250 men killed and wounded hundreds of his own, gutting the columns he would need six weeks later at San Jacinto.

King & Country's figure gives Santa Anna mounted and directing, his right arm flung out to point his columns at the walls. He rides a black stallion in full dress uniform — a gold-laced dark blue coatee with red facings and heavy gold epaulettes, a pale-blue sash, white breeches, tall boots, and a plumed bicorne — the horse furnished with an ornate gold-edged blue shabraque. Set him on a rise behind Marching to Battle (Set A) and Santa Anna's Laddermen as the commander who launched them, the mounted centrepiece of an Alamo assault diorama — or stand him beside W. Britain's dismounted General Santa Anna as the same man on foot.
