George H. W. Bush was among the youngest naval aviators in the fleet, flying a TBM Avenger torpedo bomber off the light carrier USS San Jacinto. On 2 September 1944 he pressed a strike against a radio installation on the island of Chichijima, and flak set his aircraft ablaze on the run in. He held his course, released his bombs on the target, then turned out to sea and bailed out — the only member of his crew to survive. He drifted on a life raft under the guns of a hostile island until the submarine USS Finback surfaced and pulled him aboard. For pressing home the attack he received the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was twenty years old.

The figure walks out to his aircraft in full flight gear — khaki flight suit, leather helmet with goggles and earphones, yellow Mae West and parachute harness, gloves in hand. He belongs in a "future presidents in uniform" display alongside fellow naval officers John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon, and among the carrier flyers with the U.S. Navy Pilot.

W. Britain model 10067. 1/30 scale (approximately 60mm), matte-painted metal. Single foot figure on a sculpted base. Boxed.
