By 1944 a German soldier on the Western Front spent a great deal of the war looking up. Allied fighter-bombers — the "Jabos," as the Germans called them — owned the daylight sky so completely that any movement in the open invited a diving attack: a strafing run of cannon and machine-gun fire, or a bomb, out of nowhere. Troops learned to move by night, to hug hedges and buildings, and to keep one eye always on the clouds; a clear day was "Jabo weather," and dreaded. This grenadier's upward gaze is the reflex of that war — the constant, wary search of the sky that Allied air power forced on every man beneath it.

The figure kneels in a greatcoat, 98k in hand, face turned to the sky. Set him in a position under threat with the Grenadier Kneeling No.2 and the Grenadier Advancing Cautiously — watching for the very thing he fears, the American U.S.A.A.F. Fighter Pilot overhead.
