Every army had a word for it. The British called it a Blighty one, after the soldiers' name for home. The French called it la bonne blessure — the good wound. The Germans called it a Heimatschuss, the home shot. All three meant the same thing: an injury bad enough to get you evacuated and not bad enough to ruin you. Men on every side of the wire hoped for the same specific piece of luck, and each language had already found a name for it. This man may or may not have got one. Walking wounded means only that he can still walk.

W. Britain has not sculpted a wound. No dressing, no sling, no blood — just a man in a Stahlhelm and red-piped field grey with his right arm held across his body and a rifle over his shoulder, walking. You have to take the title's word for it, which is probably the point. In a diorama he goes the other way from the infantryman advancing and the ammunition carrier, down the same road as the men in Prisoners and Wounded to the Rear.
