A Confederate gun crew at sustained fire was not a parade-ground formation. With each shot the bronze barrel heated, smoke wrapped the piece, and the carriage recoiled four to six feet — men had to wrestle it back into battery between rounds while the chief-of-piece called the next correction. Sustained rate was about two rounds a minute. Under pressure, with infantry coming up the slope, the same crew could push four or six. At that pace they fought in whatever they had on — jackets thrown off, sleeves rolled, suspenders showing, hats traded for whatever shaded the eyes. The figures here capture that informality: a battery in its working clothes.
