The 42nd's first division reached New York in June 1756, after a rough Atlantic crossing of more than nine weeks. Within days the Highlanders were heading up the Hudson to Albany. Their tents had not arrived, so they were billeted on the townspeople. The rest of 1756 brought no fighting. Through the winter and spring the regiment drilled for bush fighting and aimed fire. In the summer of 1757 it sailed with Lord Loudoun's expedition to Halifax for an attack on Louisbourg, then returned when French warships were reported off Cape Breton. The 42nd's first real battle in America would not come until Ticonderoga in July 1758.
The grenadier company advances together. The officer strides in front with his sword drawn and his arm pointing the way, and the sergeant comes on with his halberd raised. Six grenadiers follow with muskets ported or levelled, bayonets fixed. They wear tall black fur caps with red fronts, red coats with the buff facings the 42nd wore before it became a royal regiment, dark Government-sett tartan, and red-and-white diced hose with buckled shoes. Each grenadier carries a broadsword. Add Grenadier Company 42nd Highland Regiment to double the company, and 42nd Highland Regiment for the battalion men. Display them under Don Troiani's Battle of Carillon Fort Ticonderoga 1758.
