Göring was the last commander of the Flying Circus. He took Jagdgeschwader 1 on 7 July 1918, after Richthofen was killed in April and Wilhelm Reinhard — Richthofen's successor — died in July. He had twenty-two victories and had been given the Pour le Mérite in May. In the last days of the war he was ordered back to Tellancourt, then to Darmstadt, and then to hand his aircraft over to the Allies. He refused, and a number of his pilots crash-landed their machines deliberately rather than surrender them. He was convicted at Nuremberg of crimes against humanity in 1946 and killed himself before he could be hanged.

W. Britain has him in field grey with the cane and the peaked cap, the Pour le Mérite at his throat and the pilot's badge on his breast — 1918, and nothing after it. In a diorama he stands where Richthofen stood, because he took his place. Guynemer is one of the men the Circus was built against. And by the week Göring was refusing to surrender his aircraft, Kaiser Wilhelm II had already abdicated and gone.
