The Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel sent some 16,000 troops to North America under the 1776 subsidy treaty, the single largest German contingent George III deployed against the rebellion. Colonel Carl Emilius Ulrich von Donop's brigade fought through the New York campaign, occupied the Trenton–Bordentown line in December 1776, and was caught on the wrong side of the Delaware at Christmas. Donop himself was mortally wounded leading the failed grenadier assault on Fort Mercer at Red Bank in October 1777. The musketeer regiment that bore his name continued in the line through the Philadelphia campaign and the long garrison years that followed.

This W. Britain figure shows a Hessian musketeer of the regiment in firing-cycle order: dark blue coat with the regiment's yellow collar, cuffs, and lapels, yellow waistcoat and breeches, white cross-belts, and the black tricorne edged white that distinguished musketeer companies from the mitre-capped grenadiers. He has braced the musket against his hip and reached back to the cartridge box on his right — a leather block-pouch holding up to 46 rounds, fitted with a brass plate based on artifacts recovered at Yorktown National Military Park. The flint pouch under the front flap is the kind of detail that rewards a close look at the figure. He stands alongside the Brunswick grenadier of Riedesel's regiment in the German line and faced Continental troops like the kneeling firing infantryman across battlefields from Long Island to Red Bank.
