The men of the 83rd Pennsylvania walked most of the way to Little Round Top. When the fighting opened at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863, the V Corps was still miles to the southeast in Maryland and Pennsylvania. It marched through much of that night and reached the field early on July 2, worn out and short on sleep. The corps spent the morning in reserve. Then, late in the afternoon, Strong Vincent's brigade was ordered to the double-quick, and the tired men of the 83rd climbed the rocky slope of Little Round Top and took position just minutes before the Confederate attack hit. Before a Civil War soldier ever fired a shot, he usually had to march a long way to get there.

The figure is in mid-stride, carrying his rifle musket at right shoulder shift, the standard marching position, with the fixed bayonet pointing skyward. His knapsack, blanket roll, cartridge box, and canteen are all in place, and he wears K&C's 83rd Pennsylvania uniform: dark blue chasseur jacket with yellow trim, green shoulder tufts, sky-blue trousers, and white gaiters, with a red corps badge on his forage cap.
