Infantry Biting the Cartridge – Union Soldier in Loading Pose
Model: CW134
Scale: 1/30
Finish: Matte
This military miniature figure depicts a moment both routine and perilous for any Civil War soldier—the preparation to fire. Our Union infantryman is captured mid-action, biting open a paper cartridge to ready his muzzle-loading rifle for battle.
Paper cartridges were standard issue throughout the war, containing a pre-measured amount of gunpowder and a lead ball wrapped in treated paper. Coated with beeswax, tallow, or lard to waterproof the charge, these cartridges had to be torn open—typically with the soldier’s teeth—before pouring the powder into the barrel. It was a practice that required calm under pressure and dexterity amid the chaos of combat.
Clad in the distinctive uniform of the 83rd Pennsylvania Volunteers, this toy soldier combines technical accuracy with dynamic storytelling. His alert expression and poised musket make this a compelling addition to any Civil War diorama or collector's display.
