On the rainy night of 27 May 1754, Lieutenant Colonel George Washington, 22 years old, left his camp at Great Meadows with about forty Virginians. Tanaghrisson, the Ohio Iroquois leader the British called the Half King, had found a French party camped in a hidden glen nearby and sent word urging an attack. After a night march through the rain, the column reached Tanaghrisson's camp at dawn. His warriors led them to the glen, and the two parties crept in to surround the French. A shot was fired, and no one has ever settled by whom. After about fifteen minutes the French surrendered. Their commander, Ensign Joseph Coulon de Jumonville, lay dead, and the skirmish is usually counted as the opening fight of the war.
This warrior moves forward bent nearly double, his musket held low across his body and his eyes on the ground ahead. His shaved head is painted red under a dark scalp lock, with a black band of paint across his eyes. Silver ornaments hang from his ears and silver bands circle his arms. He wears a pouch on a strap, a breechcloth striped in blue, yellow and red, and brown leather leggings tied with garters above his moccasins. For a Jumonville Glen scene, lead him in with Native Warrior Walking with Caution and "Fresh Tracks" Native Warrior Checking Trail. Set the French camp below them in a rocky hollow with Compagnies Franches de la Marine Make Ready.
