In July 1759 Sir William Johnson brought nearly a thousand Iroquois warriors to the British siege of Fort Niagara. When General John Prideaux was killed, the army's officers handed command to Johnson, partly to keep the Iroquois in the field. A French relief column came up from the west with its own Native allies, Iroquois among them. Johnson sent Iroquois emissaries ahead, and they persuaded many of the warriors marching with the French to stand aside. On 24 July the column ran into a British breastwork across the road at La Belle-Famille, two miles south of the fort. It broke, the Iroquois pursued, and Fort Niagara surrendered the next day.

This warrior stands reloading, his musket grounded at his side as he draws the ramrod clear of the muzzle. He wears a red wool coat with green lapels and cuffs and brass buttons, open over a long white shirt. A blue blanket is thrown over one shoulder. His head is shaved to a red feathered roach, with rings hanging at his ears. Below are green leggings tied with red garters and moccasins.
