Historical Significance:

The New Orleans Greys were a militia unit formed in New Orleans in 1835 to support Texian forces in their fight against Mexico. Named after their distinctive grey uniforms, the unit consisted of two companies totaling around 120 men. Many of these volunteers were adventurers, frontiersmen, and soldiers of fortune, eager to fight for Texas' independence.

Key Battles:

  • Siege of Bexar (Dec. 1835): The Greys played a major role in the Texian victory, forcing the surrender of General Martín Perfecto de Cos.
  • The Alamo (Feb.-Mar. 1836): 23 members of the Greys fought and died defending the Alamo, standing alongside James Bowie, William B. Travis, and Davy Crockett against General Santa Anna's Mexican forces.
  • The Goliad Campaign (March 1836): Many Greys were captured and later executed in the Goliad Massacre.
  • Battle of San Jacinto (April 1836): Some survivors fought in this decisive battle, helping to secure Texas' independence.
