The Artillery Company of Newport has served under the same charter since 1741. That year the Rhode Island General Assembly chartered it as the Artillery Company of the Town of Newport, modelled on the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts. It was the first chartered independent company in the Rhode Island militia, and it held a privilege most militia units did not: its members elected their own officers, while other militia officers were appointed by the governor. The company still exists, now a ceremonial unit of the Rhode Island militia that fires cannon salutes and provides honour guards. Its 1835 stone armory on Clarke Street in Newport is a museum.
Don Troiani paints a sergeant of the company in the years of the French and Indian War: an older man standing at ease with one hand on his hip and his halberd upright in the other. He wears a gold-laced tricorne and a long dark blue coat with brass buttons, open over a white waistcoat. A sword hangs at his side, with white stockings and buckled shoes below. Hang it with Tradition of London's Royal Artillery 1750, the regular gunners in the same artillery blue. Add British Infantry, whose description covers the sergeant's halberd. For more colonial troops of the war, pair it with Don Troiani's Black Massachusetts Provincial, 1757.
