Three men, three eras of infantry weapon — this little set captures the German squad of the late war caught mid-transition. The kneeling rifleman carries the bolt-action Kar98k, a Mauser design essentially unchanged since the days of the Kaiser, firing one aimed shot at a time. The standing man sprays an MP40 submachine gun, all close-range volume and no reach. And the prone soldier fires the StG44 — the world's first true assault rifle, which for the first time combined the range of a rifle with the automatic firepower of a submachine gun, and set the pattern every modern infantry weapon has followed since. A single German squad in 1944 might field all three at once, the nineteenth century and the future firing side by side.

The three-figure set is a Waffen-SS fire team in action, each man with a different weapon: a kneeling rifleman with the K98k, a standing soldier firing the MP40, and a prone man working the StG44, all in SS camouflage. Together they complete the collection's combat squad — set them with the MG34 Gun Team laying down the heavy fire, under the SS Squad Leader and the Waffen SS Officer directing them. Three men firing from three postures — kneeling, standing, prone — give a diorama instant depth and the sense of a position fully in action.
