On 13 March 1758 Captain Robert Rogers led about 180 rangers and volunteers on snowshoes up the west side of Lake George, scouting toward Ticonderoga. When a party of about a hundred men came down the frozen creek bed ahead of them, he laid an ambush and opened fire. It was only the advance guard. The main body, French troops and several hundred Native warriors, came up behind it and caught the rangers on the hillside in deep snow. By dark most of Rogers' command had been killed or captured. He got away with a handful of survivors. A story grew up that he escaped by sliding down the cliff now called Rogers Rock, but there is little evidence for it.

This private stands at ease, his musket grounded at his right side and a blade held low in his left hand. He wears a blue bonnet, a buttoned green jacket with a black neck stock and green leggings tied with red garters, with moccasins on his feet. A leather pouch rides at his belt. For a winter scene on Lake George, set him on snow-covered groundwork with Rogers' Rangers Standing Firing, No.1 and "First Shot" Rogers' Rangers, with Native Warrior Yelling War Cry coming through the trees.
