Santa Anna meant the assault to be silent. The columns were to form in the dark and cross the open ground without a sound, catching the garrison asleep before the first shot. It did not hold. As the men neared the walls in the cold small hours of 6 March 1836, the tension broke and soldiers began to shout — "¡Viva Santa Anna!", "¡Viva la República!" — and bugles and cheering rolled up out of the dark. The noise woke the Alamo. An officer of the guard on the north wall heard it, roused the garrison, and the first Texian volleys were already tearing into the columns before they reached the ditch. The shouting cost the attackers the surprise they had counted on.

King & Country's figure is all motion — advancing at a half-run, his left arm flung up and his mouth open in a shout, the bayoneted musket carried low in his right hand. He wears the Mexican line uniform with red facings and white piping, red wings at the shoulders, white crossbelts and a cartridge box, a red blanket-roll and gourd canteen at his hip, campaign trousers torn and filthy from the march, and huarache sandals. Put him at the center of the charge, urging S.A.A. Soldier Charging Forward and S.A.A. Soldier Running Forward toward the wall where Santa Anna's Laddermen are raising their ladders — the makings of an assault diorama caught at its loudest moment.
