The soldier reaching for another cartridge had already survived the hardest part of the campaign — getting to Texas at all. Santa Anna drove his army more than eight hundred miles north from central Mexico through the winter of 1835–36, across arid tableland and into a late-February norther, and hundreds died of cold, hunger, and disease before they ever saw the Alamo. Many in the ranks were conscripts and raw recruits, some of them Maya-speaking men from the Yucatán who understood little of the Spanish commands shouted at them. Women — the soldaderas — followed the columns, carrying loads, cooking, and nursing the sick. The men who reached San Antonio were tired long before the assault began.

King & Country's figure is caught mid-stride, reaching back to the cartridge box at his hip for a fresh round while his bayoneted musket stays forward in his other hand. He wears the Mexican line uniform — a dark blue coatee with red lapels, collar, and cuffs in white piping, a red worsted wing at the shoulder, white crossbelts and a brass plate — with a gourd canteen and cartridge box at his side, campaign trousers torn and grey with dust, and huarache sandals.
