Sgt. William Carney Flag Bearer 54th Massachusetts
Sgt. William Carney Flag Bearer 54th Massachusetts
This toy soldier depicts Sgt. William Carney, the flag bearer of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry.
Born a slave, Carney became a brave American soldier and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Fort Wagner in 1863. However, he did not receive this honor until 1900, almost 37 years after the battle.
During the battle, when the color sergeant was shot down, Carney bravely took up the flag and led the way to the parapet, planting the colors there despite being wounded twice. In 1901, a song was published about his heroic deeds titled 'Boys the Old Flag Never Touched the Ground'.
This toy soldier is a 1/30 scale and has a matte finish. It is a one-piece set, making it a perfect addition to any collection. Show your admiration for Sgt. William Carney and the 54th Massachusetts Infantry with this detailed and historically significant toy soldier.
