In the autumn of 1768, at Fort Stanwix in New York, the Six Nations of the Iroquois ceded to Britain their claims to the land south of the Ohio River, as far west as the mouth of the Tennessee. Much of that country, including present-day Kentucky, was the Shawnee's hunting ground. Shawnee and Delaware representatives were present, but they did not sign and had no real say, because the British and Iroquois treated them as dependent nations. The Shawnee refused to accept the new line, and settlers crossed it anyway. The raids and reprisals that followed led to Dunmore's War in 1774, and the dispute over the Ohio boundary was not settled until the Treaty of Greenville in 1795.
Don Troiani paints a Shawnee warrior standing alert, his musket held across his body in one hand and a ball-headed war club hanging from the other. His shaved head carries a red roach, and his face and body are painted red with bold black stripes and a zigzag band across the shoulders. Large silver ornaments hang from his ears, with a silver gorget at his throat and silver bands on his arms and wrists. A quilled knife sheath hangs on his chest, over a blue breechcloth, fringed red leggings with beaded garters, and quilled moccasins. W. Britain sculpted Shawnee Indian Warrior, 1750-80 from this painting, so print and figure display naturally together. Add Native Warrior Casualty, Falling, whose description covers the Shawnee at Point Pleasant, and Native Warrior Fighting with War Club and Knife.
