Sitting Bull (c. 1831–1890) was a Hunkpapa Lakota chief, medicine man, and one of the best-known Native American leaders of the nineteenth century. Born in what is now South Dakota, he gained respect as a warrior and later became an influential leader among Lakota communities. He supported resistance to government efforts to force Native peoples onto reservations and was associated with the Lakota and Cheyenne victory at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. Sitting Bull later lived in Canada, returned to the United States, and was killed during an attempted arrest in 1890.
