In the hands of the SS, even a dog became an instrument of terror. The German Shepherd — prized by the Nazis as an ideal "Germanic" breed — was trained by the SS not as a companion but as a weapon, and nowhere more brutally than in the concentration camps. Guards used attack dogs to control, intimidate and punish prisoners, setting them on the starving and the exhausted and hunting down those who tried to escape. Survivor testimony is full of the dogs, remembered with the same dread as the men who held their leashes. A handler like this one, smart in his black SS uniform with a shepherd at heel, is a reminder that in this regime the ordinary and the monstrous were never far apart — even the family dog was conscripted into cruelty.

The figure is an SS man in black dress uniform holding a German Shepherd on a short leash — outwardly a smart ceremonial pairing, but part of an organisation for which dogs were tools of control. He belongs with the SS apparatus that ran the camps, the men embodied in the Himmler and Heydrich set and the SS Inspection Officer, and the black-uniformed officer class of the SS-Brigadeführer. In a diorama the dog handler adds a note of quiet menace — the sense that this is a scene one would not want to be on the wrong side of.
