Before a gun can fire, someone has to see. Every engagement began with a man's eyes and an outstretched arm — the gun commander identifying a target and putting his crew onto it, whether a tank cresting a distant ridge or aircraft on a bearing. The layers then spun their handwheels to swing the barrel round while the rangers read the distance. For anti-aircraft work, optical rangefinders and mechanical predictors did the mathematics, but the process still started with human eyes searching the sky. The seconds between spotting a target and sending the first shell were what separated a sharp crew from a dead one.
The three figures catch the survey moment: one crewman points out the target while the others move to their stations, an ammunition container at hand. This is the third of W. Britain's 88 crew sets — combine it with Preparing for Action, No.1 and No.2 for a fuller crew, and set them all around the 88mm Flak 36/37. Together the three sets turn a bare model gun into a complete battery caught in the rush to open fire.
W. Britain model 25221. 1/30 scale, matte-painted metal. Three-figure set — three members of a German 88 Flak gun crew surveying the field, with an ammunition container. Boxed.
