Dig up the whole of Viking-Age Scandinavia and you will find one mail shirt. A single fragmented, possibly complete byrnie from Gjermundbu in Haugsbygd — the same site that produced the only Viking helmet intact enough to reconstruct properly. That is not proof that mail was nearly unknown, and this is where the evidence turns slippery: Scandinavian burial custom simply did not favour putting helmets or armour into the ground, so the absence tells us about funerals as much as about what men actually owned. What is beyond doubt is the cost. A mail shirt meant thousands of iron rings, every one of them riveted closed by hand, four rings threaded through each fifth — weeks of a smith's working life sunk into a single garment. That put it out of reach of ordinary men. Mail belonged to professional warriors and to the wealthy, and a man wearing it was saying something about himself before he opened his mouth.

Which is the point of this figure. Svend's name means something like "young warrior", and W. Britain have given him a full mail hauberk, a helmet, a sword and a seax at the belt — either he has done very well for himself already, or his family could afford to equip him. Set him beside "Scotend" Saxon Archer and the contrast does the work for you: a tunic, a leather cap and a bow on one side, iron from head to knee on the other, and both of them on the same field. He pairs off naturally against "Bestanden" Saxon Defending with Sword and Shield, and stands shoulder to shoulder with "Halvar" Viking Defending with Sword and Shield — two shields overlapping is the beginning of a wall, and a wall is the beginning of a diorama.
