No one knows for certain how David Crockett died, and the argument has run for nearly two centuries. The version this set portrays is the oldest and best loved: Crockett on his feet to the last, ammunition gone, swinging his long rifle by the barrel like a club amid a ring of fallen enemies. Against it stands the account of a Mexican officer, José Enrique de la Peña, whose memoir describes Crockett as one of a small group taken alive and then executed on Santa Anna's order after the fighting stopped. Both versions have their defenders among historians. What is certain is that Crockett died at the Alamo on 6 March 1836, and that his fame only grew afterward.
