This finely detailed 1/30 scale two-figure set portrays a pair of Roman Optios on the march, serving as the vital second-in-command within a Legion Century. Functioning much like an executive officer, the Optio’s primary battlefield role was to stand at the rear of the formation, maintaining order and ensuring soldiers held their ranks under pressure.

Beyond enforcing discipline, Optios carried significant responsibility. They relayed and executed the Centurion’s commands, assumed leadership should the Centurion fall, and handled administrative duties while in camp or on campaign. Their leadership position made them essential to the smooth operation of Roman military structure.

Optios were distinguished not only by rank but by compensation — receiving double the pay of a standard Legionary — and were often the most likely candidates for promotion to Centurion when vacancies arose.
