A warship was run from its quarterdeck, and this set assembles the men who stood there. A post-captain commanded; his lieutenants kept the watches and led in action; the master — often the figure in the plain coat and round hat — was the navigator who actually conned the ship; midshipmen learned the trade as "young gentlemen"; and the surgeon, boatswain, and mates ran their departments. At Trafalgar these were the men on Victory's exposed quarterdeck, walking under fire as a matter of honour — among them Captain Hardy, Nelson's flag captain, who was beside the Admiral when he fell and at his side again below decks when he died. The quarterdeck was the most dangerous deck on the ship, and the officers' place was there.

The eight-figure set is the officers and specialists of a man-of-war — Admiral Lord Nelson and Captain Hardy among captains, lieutenants and midshipmen in gold-laced blue, a master in his plain coat, a surgeon, and a boatswain's mate with his speaking trumpet. It is the quarterdeck of a Trafalgar diorama. Crew the ship below with Admiral Lord Nelson with Crew, post the Royal Marines at their stations, and line the gangway with a second Royal Marines detachment.
