A Federal cavalryman usually carried a carbine built for the job, often a Sharps or later a Spencer repeater. His Confederate counterpart carried whatever could be found. Southern troopers went into battle with captured Sharps and Burnside carbines, British-made Enfield musketoons run through the blockade, sawed-off muskets, double-barreled shotguns, and hunting rifles brought from home. A Richmond factory turned out copies of the Sharps carbine, but they were known for leaking gas at the breech and breaking down. Out in the Trans-Mississippi, far from the arsenals, regiments like the 29th Texas were even more mixed. When a unit dismounted to fight, the men in a single company might be using half a dozen different weapons.

The figure kneels on one knee with his head down, working the hammer of his carbine back to full cock before he raises it to fire. His saber rests on the ground beside him, still in its scabbard, and his carbine sling and cartridge box hang from black leather belts. He wears K&C's Confederate cavalry uniform: gray shell jacket with yellow collar and cuffs, light gray trousers, and a gray kepi with a yellow band. Complete the dismounted skirmish line with the Kneeling Trooper Firing Carbine, Corporal Loading Carbine, and Sergeant Firing Pistol.
