At Bastogne the cold wounded as surely as the Germans did. The 101st had been rushed north so fast that many men reached the perimeter without overcoats, overshoes, or proper winter boots, and then held their foxholes through some of the coldest weeks of the war. Frostbite and trench foot swept the ranks, sending men to the aid stations who had never been touched by a bullet — feet frozen black, hands too numb to work a rifle cleanly. A greatcoat, scrounged where it could be found, was worth a great deal. To stand and fire in that cold, fingers barely feeling the trigger, took a discipline all its own.

The figure stands and fires his M1 Garand from within a long winter greatcoat, netted helmet low, web gear cinched over the wool. Line him out along a Bastogne foxhole diorama with his companion Greatcoat Trooper Firing and the Greatcoat Trooper Kneeling with Thompson, holding the perimeter at "Welcome to Bastogne".
