The German plan for the Bulge ran on a tight timetable, and it was wrecked by countless small stands. At crossroads and in villages across the Ardennes, scattered American squads dug in and fired to slow the panzer columns — a handful of riflemen holding a road for an hour, then falling back to hold the next, buying the days the Allies needed to bring up reserves. Fighting it meant working a rifle in brutal cold: numbed fingers on the trigger, actions that wanted to freeze, and the bulky wool greatcoat that kept a man alive while fighting him every time he tried to kneel, aim, and reload. The coat was warmth and hindrance at once.

The figure captures that struggle — a rifleman down on one knee, firing his M1 Garand from within the heavy M1939 wool greatcoat, netted helmet low. He anchors a snowy crossroads-defense diorama: set him firing as the "Heading Up the Line" greatcoat column comes forward and the Infantryman Walking, Winter moves up, tying into the Bastogne perimeter at "Welcome to Bastogne".
