Most of a soldier's war was not battle but waiting — and often waiting wet. For every hour of combat there were days of standing guard, holding a quiet stretch of line, or hunkering in reserve while somebody up the chain decided what came next. The rain did not care whether anything was happening; a man on a roadblock or a listening post simply stood in it, gear and all, and endured. Draping the raincoat over his pack and web equipment kept the essentials a little drier and let him vanish into the coat with his hands jammed in his pockets. The tedium and the damp were as much the infantryman's daily enemy as the Germans were.

The figure captures that stillness: a man standing hunched in the OD raincoat pulled over his equipment, rifle slung beneath it, waiting out the weather.
