Omar Bradley was the anti-Patton — quiet, unassuming, and trusted by the men in the ranks. The war correspondent Ernie Pyle dubbed him "the GI General," and the name stuck, because Bradley genuinely thought like the foot soldier and spent lives carefully. Yet this modest Missourian rose to command the 12th Army Group — over a million and a quarter men, the largest body of American troops ever placed under a single field commander. He put the First Army ashore on D-Day, held the line at the Bulge, and drove into Germany. In one of the war's odd turns, Bradley — who had once served under Patton — ended it as the flamboyant general's superior.

The figure shows him plainly dressed for the field, in a winter combat jacket and a star-marked helmet — no swagger, the look of a man more comfortable among soldiers than reporters. Set him in a high-command display with his West Point classmate and chief General Eisenhower and his headstrong subordinate General Patton — and beside the man he was truly the general of, the Infantryman with M1 Garand.
