The 16th Michigan held the right of Colonel Strong Vincent's brigade line on Little Round Top on the afternoon of July 2, 1863 — the most exposed end of the position, hit hardest by the 4th and 5th Texas working their way up the slope. The 16th began to fall back. Vincent rode to the regiment's color line, drew his sword, and called out "Don't give an inch!" loud enough for the men on either side to hear. A Confederate bullet struck him almost in the same breath. He was carried off the hill, lingered for five days, and died on July 7 — promoted to brigadier general by President Lincoln on his deathbed. The 16th Michigan held its ground.
This W. Britain figure depicts the 16th Michigan's national colors bearer in regulation Federal infantry kit — dark blue blouse, light blue trousers, dark forage cap, knapsack on his back, cartridge box on his belt — carrying the U.S. national flag stenciled with "16 Michigan Volunteers" along the white stripe near the staff. The flag is the visible symbol of the regiment that Vincent gave his life rallying. The figure anchors a Little Round Top diorama, pairing naturally with the brigade's other regiments and with the Round Tops scene sets. Pair this figure with Defending the Round Tops No.1, the Vincent/O'Rorke scene from the same moment; with Scrambling Up the Round Tops Set No.1, the Confederate attackers; or with Col. William C. Oates of the 15th Alabama, the Confederate regimental commander attacking the brigade's opposite flank.
