A Civil War light battery had four primary weaknesses: its horses, its ammunition chests, its limber chests, and its men. The gun itself — a bronze or iron tube weighing hundreds of pounds — was almost impossible to destroy with counter-battery fire. The men serving it were not. The standard crew of a 12-pounder Napoleon was nine cannoneers plus three drivers, working in choreographed sequence to load and fire. When opposing artillery zeroed in on a battery, the casualties stacked at the gun position — a shell exploding among the ammunition could detonate the limber chest and shatter the crew; a single fragment could kill the gun captain. The battery silenced when too few men remained to serve the gun.

This W. Britain set depicts the aftermath of a Union artillery position struck by Confederate counter-battery fire — two artillerymen fallen at their posts in dark blue shell jackets with red artillery trim, light blue trousers, and the battlefield equipment scattered around them: a broken wagon wheel, damaged ammunition crate, fallen rammer and worm, and the cannoneers' kepis. The set is designed as a diorama accessory rather than a standalone display piece — it adds the sobering context any complete artillery vignette needs alongside the active gun crew. Pair this set with Union Light Artillery Driver for a complete battery vignette; with M1841 6-Pound Bronze Field Gun for the gun the casualties served; or with Union Artillery Crewman for the surviving cannoneers continuing the action.

Scale: 1/30 (60mm). Matte-painted metal. W. Britain model 31503. From the American Civil War range. Two figures plus scenic accessories (broken wheel, damaged crate, scattered tools, kepis), supplied painted and ready for display.
