The "state jacket" in this figure's title is what Federal volunteer regiments wore in 1861 before the U.S. Quartermaster's Department took over uniform production. Each state organized, equipped, and clothed its own volunteer regiments at the start of the war, and the results varied: New York's earliest regiments wore gray jackets that were nearly mistaken for Confederate uniforms at First Bull Run; Pennsylvania issued dark blue shell jackets with distinctive piping; Massachusetts and other New England states each issued their own pattern. By 1862 the U.S. government had standardized issue and was clothing most regiments in regulation federal blue. A soldier still in his state jacket in mid-war was a long-service volunteer who hadn't been re-issued.

This W. Britain figure depicts a fallen Federal infantryman in a state-issue jacket — the distinctive pre-standardization uniform that identified him as one of the original 1861 volunteers. He lies on his back with arms outstretched, his rifle and forage cap fallen beside him, his knapsack still on. The state jacket is sculpted with the cut and trim of an early-war state pattern rather than the regulation federal issue. The figure is a diorama accessory rather than an action piece — it adds the sobering aftermath any complete battle scene needs. Pair this figure with Union Artillery Casualties for a battery-position casualty scene; with Col. Henry A. Morrow as the regimental commander; or with Iron Brigade Casualty Falling for a multi-casualty scene paired with the moment of impact.
