A Civil War regiment didn't march at parade-ground attention on the road. The drill manual called for "route step" — a relaxed cadence of about ninety paces per minute, allowing men to shift weight, swap the musket from one shoulder to the other, talk, and trail through whatever ground the road covered. Strict drill-step pace was reserved for inspection. Quick step at a hundred and ten paces per minute was for short distances or pressed action. Double quick at one hundred sixty-five was a jog reserved for advancing under fire. A regiment on a long march settled into route step and held it for hours.
The nine-figure set forms a regimental column on the march: officer at the head with drawn sword, color bearer second with the Army of Northern Virginia battle flag, and seven privates following at right shoulder shift with bayonets fixed. Gray shell jackets, blanket rolls atop white knapsacks on every man's back, mixed gray and sky-blue trousers reflecting the Confederate mix of issue gray and captured Federal stock. Pair the column with the standalone Privates Confederate Infantry Marching set to extend the regiment, with General Lee reviewing them from horseback, or face the column off against Privates Union Infantry Marching for a road-junction encounter scene.
