The Confederate Navy started with nothing. When the war began, the South had no warships, no shipyards capable of building them, no foundries that could cast naval guns, and no naval academy. Secretary of the Navy Stephen Mallory had to build a fleet from scratch under blockade. What he produced in four years included the world's first ironclad-versus-ironclad battle (CSS Virginia against USS Monitor, March 1862), the first successful submarine attack in history (CSS Hunley sinking USS Housatonic, February 1864), and a commerce-raiding campaign by CSS Alabama and CSS Shenandoah that captured or sank more than two hundred Union merchant ships.
The eight-figure set captures a Confederate naval landing party at attention: five sailors in the regulation gray frock and trousers with black neckerchiefs and flat sailor caps, an officer in gray frock coat with gold buttons and peaked cap at the center, a midshipman in shorter jacket, a color bearer with the Confederate Navy Jack (the rectangular battle flag pattern adopted in 1863), and a drummer boy at the right. The set is one of the few in any Civil War range that covers the naval war rather than the army. Pair it with the matching Union Navies set for a side-by-side naval display, or set it as a coastal-defense detachment alongside General Lee in overall command.
