Historical Context:
Mounted troops were the eyes and ears of the Union Army, vital for reconnaissance, raiding, screening, and communication. Compared to their Confederate counterparts, Union cavalrymen were better supplied and more heavily armed, often carrying sabers, revolvers, and carbines.
By 1863, the U.S. War Department ensured each Union cavalryman was issued a carbine, a compact, breech-loading firearm designed for use on horseback. This figure wields a New Model 1863 Sharps Carbine, one of the most popular weapons used by Union horsemen. These .52 caliber carbines were renowned for their reliability and firepower, and nearly 100,000 were produced between 1863 and 1865.
Figure Features:
Depicts a Union corporal in full motion, guiding his horse at a trotDressed in regulation blue cavalry shell jacket with yellow piping, standard-issue pants, and sky-blue cavalry stripesEquipped with a Sharps Carbine and traditional cavalry gear, including saddle bags, bedroll, and sabreHorse and rider are sculpted in mid-stride, giving the figure a powerful sense of action and forward momentum
This piece is ideal for collectors interested in the American Civil War, Union mounted forces, or 19th-century U.S. military history. It makes a striking display when paired with infantry or artillery figures from the same era.
