On 8 July 1758 General James Abercromby sent his army against the French lines outside Fort Carillon at Ticonderoga. Montcalm's troops had spent two days building a log breastwork along the ridge. In front of it they felled trees with the branches pointing outward, an abatis that broke up every British attack before it reached the wall. The 42nd had been held in reserve, but the Highlanders went forward anyway. They hacked at the branches with their broadswords and tried to climb the breastwork on each other's shoulders, and the few who got over were killed inside. By evening the regiment had lost more than half its strength, killed and wounded.

This grenadier fires from a standing position, cheek to the stock and left arm extended along the barrel. He wears the black fur grenadier cap with its red front, and a red coat with blue lapels and cuffs, white lace and barred shoulder wings. A canvas haversack hangs at his right hip. Below are the tartan plaid, a leather sporran, red-and-white diced hose with red garters, and buckled shoes. For a Ticonderoga scene, put him below the breastwork with 42nd Grenadier Standing Defending. Behind the logs, place the French Fusilier Regiment Berry and French General Marquis de Montcalm, who directed the defence.
