In January 1762 the 42nd sailed from New York with the expedition against Martinique, and from there went on to Havana, the heavily fortified Spanish port in Cuba. The siege began in June. Soldiers dug trenches and hauled guns across thin soil laid over rock under a tropical sun, and fresh water had to be brought in by boat. The Morro Castle fell to a mine and a storming party on 30 July, and the city surrendered in mid-August. The worse enemy was disease. Yellow fever and malaria killed far more British soldiers than Spanish guns did, and the regiments that came back to New York that autumn were much reduced.

This battalion company man holds his musket upright in front of his body with the bayonet fixed. His right hand is at the lock, ready to cock it before bringing the piece down to present. He wears the 42nd's campaign dress for America. On his head is a blue bonnet with a diced band and red tuft. He has a short red jacket with blue lapels and white lace, and a tartan little kilt rather than the full belted plaid. Below are blue wool leggings in the Native style, tied with red garters.
